Rich in Potassium and Anthocyanins - Cherries are a Heart Friendly Fruit

Sweet cherries are an excellent source of potassium.  One cup of cherries contains 260mg of potassium, which is equivalent to the amount in a small banana.  Potassium naturally helps regulate blood pressure by balancing fluids in our bodies.  By balancing the body's fluids, potassium can offset the blood-pressure-raising impacts of sodium.  Research has shown that people who consume potassium-rich foods, like sweet cherries, tend to have lower rates of hypertension.

Dark red cherries are rich in anthocyanins, which are a type of phytonutrient known as flavonoids.  Epidemiological research indicates that a diet with high levels of consumption of dark purple, blue and red fruits and vegetables is associated with lower rates of cardiovascular disease.
